earlier today there was a cloture vote on chuck hagel. this is essentially what we knew last week is that republicans were going to hold up the eventual askengs of chuck hagel to become defense secretary in case there was anything in his past that could damn him. seven days later apparently there's nothing in his past so they're comfortable moving forward. he's expected to be confirmed probably within the next five minutes. you can even have it in this block if we're so fortunate. >> does that not prove that the whole nonsense around the nomination process on this man was simply invented? it was theatrics. there was no substance. it's the same as the friends of hamas. shall are they? >> reporter: i think it does show that the republican strategy was to try to bloody him as much as possible with the belief if they were able to do it enough he would perhaps withdraw. he was pretty vehement last week he would not withdraw. now with the sequester looking like it's going to go forward, my calculations there's $46 billion in military cuts over

you're in "the situation room." >>> we begin with chuck hagel. he's now is going to be the nation's defense secretary. the senate has just voted to approve his nomination. he was confirmed. dana bash is up on capitol hill. barbara starr is at the pentagon. dana, what was the final roll call? >> reporter: we don't have it yet. they are finalizing it. we do know because our lisa is in the chamber she's counted 51 votes, simple majority needed for chuck hagel to be confirmed as the next defense secretary. we also know just listening to the votes as they come up he's gotten at least four yes votes from his former republican colleagues. that's not a lot but maybe more than some may have anticipated given the deep partisan divide over his nomination. this may surprise people as well. rand paul one of the most conservative senators he voted yes. cochran said he would. richard shelby of alabama and mike johans as well. this vote is still open. what this does is put this very bruising battle for chuck hagel behind him but obviously as barbara will tell yo

hagel did with the republicans and a lesson of payback in politics? >> i think it is. you know, it's loyalty. it's breaking the omerita. it's a guy who was a ten years ago considered even a leading candidate for the republican presidential nomination and went against his own president and party and even worse than that was actually right, i think, about what he said. in other words, one of the big ironies now and seeing now with the debate over hagel is if you look at the things he was saying in 2002 and 2003, a lot of it was about avoiding excess cost. the excess costs of a war that he said was unnecessary, namely iraq. here's a guy that's savvy about what he's called a bloated pentagon budget coming in at a time when the pentagon budget has to be cut so it's interesting to see whether, you know, down the line after all of this bad blood he gets credit for that. >> michael, i loved the end of your article in "the national journal." you write in washington one is forgiven many things. being right is another matter. for too many lawmakers, it would be
